Harvest House Argyle TX: Could Renting Be the New Way to Buy?

Renting used to mean an apartment. In Argyle, it now means a townhome with a yard.

What Harvest House Actually Is

Harvest House is part of Harvest, a 1,200-acre master-planned community in Argyle that will eventually include more than 4,000 homes. Inside Harvest, Harvest House is a 349-unit rental community, but 90 of those units aren’t apartments at all. They’re townhomes with private yards, built for renters the same way a subdivision is built for buyers.

The community sits inside Argyle ISD, one of the top-rated school districts in the state, right inside Harvest’s own town center, which is adding a new Tom Thumb, so it’s walkable to daily life rather than tucked off to the side.

What actually surprised me is how far the amenity list goes. Alongside the expected resort-style pool and fitness center, the community amenities include:

  • Resort-style pool with covered poolside lounge
  • 24-hour fitness center
  • Dedicated co-working lounge with private offices
  • Podcast recording studio
  • Pickleball court and putting green
  • Modern clubhouse with coffee bar
  • Game room with billiards, shuffleboard, and fireplace
  • Private, gigabit community-wide Wi-Fi
  • Dog park and pet washing station
  • Attached and detached garages, covered carports, and EV charging stations

Select homes go further still, with:

  • Private yards
  • Separate studies
  • Butler’s pantries
  • Full-size washers and dryers

Harvest isn’t stopping there. A separate community of detached, single-family-style rental homes is also being developed inside Harvest, meaning there are now two distinct build-to-rent options inside the same master-planned community.

Why This Matters: The Build-to-Rent Boom

Build-to-rent isn’t a niche experiment anymore. Dallas-Fort Worth is now the second-largest market in the country for this kind of housing, real, single-family-style homes built specifically for renters rather than buyers. That’s a meaningful shift from the traditional apartment-complex model of rental housing.

Who Is This For?

A few groups make natural sense here:

  • Families relocating to North Texas who want to live in a specific school district before committing to a purchase
  • Renters who want a yard, privacy, and the feel of single-family living without the maintenance responsibilities of ownership
  • Buyers who are still deciding between neighborhoods and want to “try before they buy” in a fast-growing area

The Bigger Question

One thing worth being clear on: this isn’t rent-to-own. There’s no option to eventually purchase the specific home you’re renting. What Hillwood is actually selling is the chance to live inside a school district and a community before committing to buy somewhere, whether that ends up being a different home elsewhere in Harvest itself or somewhere else entirely once you know the area.

With so many families and professionals relocating to North Texas, that raises a real question: is renting in a build-to-rent community becoming a deliberate first step, a way to test out a neighborhood, a commute, and a school district for a year before deciding where to actually put down roots?

If that’s the trend, it changes how we should all think about “renters” in these communities. They may be your future buyers, just not necessarily buyers of this exact house.

Bottom Line

Harvest House is a real signal of where North Texas rental housing is headed: yards instead of hallways, top school districts instead of urban cores, and a genuine on-ramp for people who aren’t ready to buy but don’t want to give up the lifestyle of a single-family home.
